Good morning everyone! I wanted to share a piece I have written for a project back during my time in college. It’s something I think is worth sharing and at least starting a conversation about! A lot of people can feel mixed feelings about being a Mature Student. Going back to college or university after taking time off is a big deal. I’m here to share some of the feelings I’ve encountered.
Life Experience Adds to a Mature Student
My first time at Mohawk College I was 18. I was extremely self-conscious and had no confidence in myself or my capabilities. Pair that with a very low emotional intelligence score. I had no real clue what I wanted out of life and who I was as a person. Well, 7 years went by, and life happened in the meantime. Life put me through situations that shaped me, leading to a unique frame of reference to bring to the table.
Through those 7 years, I became a mother, I was no longer that self-conscious, and my confidence started to soar. Over the last 7 years, I have become close to narrowing down where I want to end up career-wise. This gives me a stronger drive to achieve my goals the second time around. Over the 7 years, I have spent time finding myself. This has also helped with raising my confidence in a specific career-oriented manner.
I have grown as a person through my life experience. It’s like I have finally been able to see all of my worth and capability. I was simply too young and inexperienced to see when I was younger. As a mature student, the life experience I have had has shaped me into this career-driven, focused, confident woman with a clear goal in place. I’m truly ready for this now.
Thank you so much for stopping by everyone! Please share in the comments below how you feel about being a mature student! Have you been one? Was it a positive experience for you?
